Speaker:Shirley Deane, celebrated author and international traveler

We are delighted to welcome Shirley Deane as ourFebruary speaker. Shirley was born inNew York City and was given her first accordion at the age of eight. At 27, sheleft the United States to work her way around the world, playing her own brandof jazz and classical music. She visited 67 countries, living in Pakistan forsix months, Nepal for a year, India for eight years, and South Africa for 14years. She studied music, psychology and philosophy, attending NYU and theUniversity of Hawaii, and for a brief period studied medicine at the Universityof Munich. She was the first woman to drive a Land Rover from London to Kathmandu,and, later, managed a clinic at a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal for the SwissRed Cross, where she also raised funds and taught English. In 1967, she becamepublic relations officer and fundraiser for Inanda Seminary near Durban, SouthAfrica. She is the author of two previous books, Black South Africans,a Who’s Who (Oxford University Press, Capetown, 1978), which shepublished under Dee Shirley Deane, and Wisdom, Bliss, & CommonSense: Secrets of Self-Transformation (Quest Books, 1989), which shepublished under her Indian name, Darshani Deane. Ms. Deane returned to theUnited States in 1998 and settled in Winston-Salem, where she now writes. Hermost recent book, An Unreasonable Woman: In Search of Meaning Around theGlobe, was published last year by local publishing company, Press53.

“OUR STATE” MAGAZINE

Our guest speakerfor January is Amy Wood Pasquini, marketing director of “Our State” Magazine –North Carolina’s premiere travel, history and culture publication. She is alsothe Executive Producer of Content for “Our State,” a four-time Emmy Awardwinning television show produced by UNC-TV.

Born in Atlanta,Pasquini grew up in North Carolina. Sheobtained her BA in Journalism from Georgia State University. She is the author of two books “Life BetweenAzalea Festivals”, and “White Bred, A Prodigal Jaunt Through the Suburban South,”in addition to thirteen years worth of articles for “Our State.”

She lives in HighPoint with her husband John Pasquini where they enjoy sampling pimento cheeserecipes from around the state. Come hearAmy give her perspective on our adopted state and hear her sing the “ButterBean” song.

General Meetings are a time to welcome visitors, hear guest speakers and discuss club business. All residents of Greater Winston-Salem are invited to join us. General Meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street (just off Silas Creek parkway via the Bolton Street exit) at 10 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

Many opportunities for volunteering exist with the Winston Salem Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Join us as Angela Henrichs (Volunteer Coordinator) and Tina Stearns (Director of Community Outreach) help to educate us about Hospice and how we can get involved as Office volunteers, patient visitors, Camp Carousel volunteers (a children's camp), fundraising supporters, or event volunteers (Hospice Hope Run, Carousel of Hope, Golf Classic, Cycling, Light Up a Life holiday ornament sales).

For over thirty years, the Center has been providing a variety of services for Piedmont residents. It is headquartered in Winston-Salem near Bolton Park. The large, beautiful campus there includes the Kate B. Reynolds Home (which has 50 newly renovated private patient rooms designed to be a home away from home) and Education/Administration Buildings. Hospice exists to provide compassionate care of those individuals living with a life-limiting illness and their families, through quality medical, emotional, spiritual, and social support. Thirteen counties around us receive Hospice services. The organization continues to grow steadily and has increased its profile in our community, with many hundreds of volunteers participating in this very rewarding and special work.

Opportunities exist within "Hospice Hands" for those who like to bake, play bingo, sew, work in food pantries, and garden. They appreciate help with Speakers Bureau (providing awareness of services in the community by speaking at churches and civic organizations), Church Liaisons, and workers at Health Fairs. Or consider assisting at the Main Office with filing, data entry, and bulk mailings. Holiday helpers donate holiday meals or adopt needy families. The organization welcomes help with preparing and bringing in "comfort meals" for patients' families at the Hospice Home. Patient/Family volunteers are trained to visit and offer extra support and companionship. Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home volunteers support the patients and administration at the Hospice inpatient facility and may visit patients, answer the phone at the information desk, or direct visitors to patient rooms.

CHANGE TO GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM FOR OCTOBER

According to Barbara Mellin, our October speaker, we don’t have to go to the Louvre, the Metropolitan, MOMA or the Smithsonian to find artwork by renowned artists or visit SOHO to find good contemporary art. We have examples right here in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point. Barbara will show us where to look in her slide presentation, Museums and Galleries of the Triad. Barbara is enthusiastic about the arts of our area and looks forward to sharing her discoveries with us.

We know Barbara as this year’s President of Newcomers. She is also an art historian and artist who has been involved in the arts for almost 40 years. Barbara has presented at a conference in Armenia and exhibited her own artwork in, and served as juror for, numerous art shows and exhibits. She was a public and private school Art Specialist and served as Chair of the Reading, MA Arts Council. Barbara won Harvard’s Crite Prize for Humanities Research, has lectured on the arts for museums, colleges and art associations, and has also illustrated a book.

Barbara created the Young Artists Studio for children, where she taught for 25 years, and has taught college-level courses in Art History and Studio Art/Drawing for more than a decade. She founded and served as Editor in Chief of the bi-monthly magazine Arts Around Boston, which was honored by the governor in 1999. As a free-lance arts writer, she has published nearly 200 articles in national and international magazines. Barbara currently writes a syndicated column called ArtSmart Travels and is a contributing columnist for Renaissance magazine. She is also an arts advocate, who co-founded (with her sister) the Boston-based non-profit ArtsFirst to sponsor conferences for students, artists and educators. As an independent gallery curator, she has created exhibitions at the Whistler House Museum, Bradford College, the Federal Courthouse, Boston and other venues. Barbara was also the curator of the Owen Smith Shuman Gallery in Groton, MA for two years before moving to Winston-Salem.

We donated close to 15 dozen cookies after last month’s Craft meeting and Hospice was truly grateful (they use 8 dozen a day for visitor tea refreshments). Bring your cookies with you to bake/decorate, or bring any amount of baked cookies to donate. We will also make and decorate some basic sugar cookies at my house. I have containers here to transport them later. We happily accept donations of your partially-full containers of icing, trim or other decorations! Due to varying recipe ingredient, please prepare the dough before you arrive in case we don’t have what you need. If you are planning to help please contact Chris at 336-293-4583.

Join us for the first of 2 months devoted to Spring cookie-making. We will meet at Chris M’s house in W-S, to bake and decorate cookies from 1-3pm. These cookies will then be donated to Hospice of Winston-Salem for use with their daily teas for families and visitors. You are welcome to bring cookies to decorate, or bring dough that we can bake and then decorate. If you have any partial tubes of icing or leftover trimmings, bring them along. Hospice prefers softer cookies (thin, crispy cookies don't freeze well). I will supply some icings and also my Wilton decorating tips and bags, as well as some cookie cutters. Spare cookie sheets would be welcome. Everybody is welcome! We will continue this project next month, so if you can’t join us in April maybe we will see you in May. In December, the Craft Group is going on a Field Trip to Asheville to see the famous Gingerbread Houses at the Grove Park Inn. This is a holiday display that has generated much local enthusiasm! I have not seen the houses before, but hear great things about them. We will have lunch in Asheville (at a restaurant as yet to be determined).

We'll depart at 9:00am. We will meet at the Barnes & Noble parking lot (park in the back section) on Hanes Mall Blvd and will carpool to Asheville which is about 2 hours away. Your RSVP is very important so we can plan for drivers. Please respond by December 3rd to Chris M at 293-4583. NOTE: the trip is Tuesday not Wednesday.

Our speaker for November will be Joe Mills who wrote: “Opening a bottle of wine is an act of optimism!” In addition to authoring several books of poetry, he (along with his wife) has written A Guide to North Carolina’s Wineries. The Yadkin Valley, North Carolina’s first federally recognized American Viticultural Area, has more than 20 wineries and over 400 acres of vineyards. At our November meeting, Mr. Mills will share his insights into the history of wine growing in our region, the techniques used to produce a good vintage, and the variety of wines and activities available at the vineyards. BOOKMARKS brings writers and readers of all ages together as renowned authors, illustrators, storytellers and chefs share their work and insights through readings, presentations, panel discussions, workshops and book-signings. The sixth annual free festival will feature more than 40 authors along with creative and interactive activities for children. She is also an author herself, having been published in local and national journals.

On August 14th, we will be going to Raffaldini Vineyards for a tour of their winery with our own personal guide, as well as wine tasting at the end of the tour. For those of you who haven’t heard of Raffaldini Vineyards, it is located in Ronda, NC, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and Brushy Mountains...a beautiful backdrop to their authentic, reproduction of an Italian Villa. Our tour begins at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 14th. They have picnic areas on the grounds, which you are welcomed to use either before or after our tour. You can bring your own picnic or choose from their menu of prepared foods. All the information on the vineyard can be found at www.raffaldini.com, including directions and their menu. The cost of this tour, our personal tour guide and the wine tasting is $15.39 per person, including tax. This amount will need to be prepaid by July 25th. Winston-Salem continues to live up to its claim to be “The City of the Arts”. Mary Craig Tennille will share with us information about the much anticipated opening of the New Downtown Center for the Arts (formerly known as the

Sawtooth Building). According to Arts Council news, this multi-million dollar project is transforming the historic Sawtooth Center and neighboring properties into what has been heralded as “Winston-Salem’s living room”, a multifunctional facility that not only will house the Sawtooth School but also will be a venue for performances and exhibitions and special events. The facility will include Mountcastle Forum; Reynolds Place, with a panoramic view of the Winston-Salem skyline; Hanesbrand Theatre, a black-box theater that will accommodate diverse arts activities from Shakespearian productions to dance and films; a drive through/drop off entrance on Spruce Street and a new portico. Ms. Tennille will also discuss volunteer opportunities. A gala weekend celebration is planned for the September opening with refreshments, music, theater, dance and visual arts. W-S Shelter in Need...

As it states in our directory of members, the purpose of Newcomers & Neighbors is not only to

promote friendship among ourselves and to aid each other in adjusting to the community, but also to “take an active interest in the civic and social welfare of the community” and “to aid our community through the gift of time, energy and funds for worthy purposes.” Once again, we have the opportunity, this month, to help fulfill our purpose by contributing much-needed items for God's Open Hand Shelter, (a 501c3) housed in the basement of Winston-Salem’s Lloyd Presbyterian Church (a historic church founded in 1870 by northern missionaries for freed black slaves.) Opened in 2002 by Miss Ella Pomeroy to give hospitality and a warm space to people who are homeless or otherwise need refuge, this day shelter, located near downtown W-S on Chestnut Street is open Monday -Friday from 10am-2pm. The church provides the space and pays for all utilities; the staff is volunteer. The Shelter does receive limited financial support from several local Presbyterian churches but relies on personal donations for day–to-day outreach. Although this shelter is operated inside a church, the clients are not required to participate in any service or study. This is an outreach program to the surrounding community and a safe haven for those who need comfort and help.

Your donations of the items suggested below will be greatly appreciated. Please bring your

donations to the February 23rd general meeting. If you cannot attend the February meeting but would still like to contribute, contact member Vicki S at 608-4685, who is coordinating the project, to arrange for a pick up.

The following items are needed on a regular basis for the shelter:

Personal Items: Combs, disposable razors, shaving lotion, toothbrushes/paste, deodorant, shampoo, soap, hand lotion, wash cloths, Q-tips, emery boards, band aids, AA and AAA batteries (radios), stamps, paper and pens, envelopes, sanitary napkins for women, etc. (smaller sizes for easy transport).

Clothing for men/women: (new) -underwear, socks, shoestrings, work gloves, shirts/sweaters can be purchased at Goodwill as long as they are in clean/good condition

Entertainment: books, games, puzzles

Food: Coffee, snacks, popcorn (already popped & flavored), Kool Aid packets, sugar & creamer,

peanut butter, gum, etc.

This month’s speaker will be Jennifer Cannino, co-author of “Picking Cotton - Our Memoir of Injustice & Redemption”. She’s a resident of W-S and has appeared on 60 Minutes to tell her real-life story about being a victim of a terrible crime in her early 20s, her survival, her vow to put the man away forever. She had the opportunity to identify him, and he was sentenced to prison for the rest of his life. There was only one problem: he was innocent as DNA later proved it. Theirs is a powerful story of forgiveness and redemption. She has since become a speaker on judicial Reform, and the book has just been released in paperback. The meeting will also include an update on activities and board decisions, as well as our 50-50 raffle, coffee and conversation.

W-S Women in Need...Let's help!!

Last year, our group assembled beautiful holiday gift boxes for the Women's Shelter of Winston-Salem. The items were truly appreciated, and our contact noted that these women seldom get gifts created especially for them. For those of you who are interested in participating, we will again be collecting items at the November General Meeting. We will meet in early December to assemble the packages.

The following items are suggested: umbrellas, ponchos, gloves or mittens, scarves, knit hats, pocket calendars or agendas, journals, phone or gift cards and underwear. PLEASE, NO TOILETRIES, as the shelter has stated they have more than enough. Also, if you have winter sweaters or clothes suitable for women or teenage girls that you are discarding, the shelter has a need for these items. (Clothing will NOT be placed in the gift boxes, but we will make sure that the shelter receives them.) If you are unable to attend the November meeting, please contact Terry H to make other arrangements: 416-2313.

This year, we are combining our annual Holiday Party with our ever-popular Snoop game. Snoop is an easily learned card/dice game. EACH PLAYER must bring an unwrapped white elephant holiday item (a decoration, ornament, apparel, etc. — the more outrageous the better) in a plain brown bag that can be opened easily for viewing. Also, please bring an appetizer to share and your own adult beverage. Coffee and dessert will be provided. Please park only on the house side of the street. Remember to wear your nametag (if you have one.) You may also bring an optional $10 gift card for teens. The cards will be collected and donated to the Salvation Army. However, give your parking ticket to Vicki that evening. (parking garage located beneath the building on Marshall Street.) At our September General Meeting, we will be collecting letters and donated items to send care packages to soldiers serving in Afghanistan, near Jalalabad.

If you're unable to make the meeting, you're welcome to make arrangements with Connie B to drop off a donation prior to Sept. 22 at 440-922-0909. Any monetary donations will be put toward shipping costs or purchasing supplemental items in bulk. (Please write checks out to "Newcomers Club of W-S" with Troops in the memo.) We are hoping to have the packages assembled and shipped by mid-October to beat the holiday mail rush!

If you would like to participate in packing of the boxes, contact Connie at the number above. Let's do our best to show them we truly care about them and deeply appreciate the sacrifices they make for us everyday.

The following is a detailed list of some of the troops favorite items: Handwritten Letters (must be un-sealed), Homemade cards & children's drawings, Sunday comics & sports sections, Magazines (sports, cars, news), Jerky/Slim Jims, Trail mix, Popcorn, Dried Fruits, Candies, Sunflower seeds, Fruit roll-ups, PopTarts, Energy Bars, Granola, Cereal Bars, Toiletries (travel-size & non-liquid), Plastic baggies (gallon & quart size), Stationary/Envelopes, Crossword, Puzzle, & Joke books, Frisbees, Playing cards, and Greeting cards (un-used, to send home to their families). **Travel-size or individual-size items are best.

Items to Avoid: canned items, aerosols, anything which contains pork, or anything that could possibly break, melt, or leak. If it can; it will!

Craft Group Projects

1) Quilts for Kids - A non-profit charity that helps comfort children in need with the gift of a crib-size patchwork quilt. This organization turns discontinued fabric into quilts for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses or abuse. QFK is looking for volunteers to sew the quilts with material that they provide!! You can either just quilt the top and they'll finish it, or make a complete quilt with backing and binding. This is a project that we can do as individuals.

2) Scarves of Hope - The goal of this program is to provide hand-made

scarves to individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer. Simply knit/crochet a unisex

scarf - any size, color or design, making it as wild and wooly as you like and deliver

it to one of the following locations:

We'll be making bird houses to donate to the Habitat for Humanity's BIRDFEST!

21st: Annual "Casino Night" Group Social (guest welcome)

It's one of our most popular social events of the year will be held at Margee & Dave N's home.

Games to be played will include: roulette, blackjack, craps, TX holdem' and more.

We'll conclude the night with drawing for great door prizes!

Each player is asked to ante up $5 in return for plenty of funny money to play with.

Also, please bring an appetizer to share and (if you like something stronger to drink) please

bring your own adult beverage, marked with your name.

Marisa Ray will be our guest speaker telling us more about the W-S Foundation.

We meet at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street.
